Our most requested program is the Manatee Encounter. It is designed to provide an appreciation for the Florida Manatee through a unique educational experience. Some scientists believe that we are amidst the final decades of the manatee’s existence. However, with proper education and awareness, we believe today’s youth can prove that theory incorrect as they mature to tomorrow’s adults - Education Today ~ Preservation Tomorrow!
The Manatee Encounter program includes an informative slide presentation introducing the life history of the Manatee and other various marine mammals as well as the guidelines for their “in-water” Manatee encounter. Following the presentation, participants are fitted for wetsuits and issued equipment including mask, fins and snorkel. Participants only need bring a swimsuit, towel and warm clothes to change into on-board SEA’s custom 40-foot 46-passenger vessel, Venture I, which is equipped with two changing rooms and port-a-potties.

After a short boat ride and tour of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, participants will have an opportunity to enter the water and snorkel face-to-face with these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Crystal River is home to the largest wintering population of Florida Manatees, more than 500 annually. Although the weather and air temperature may be cold, manatees come to Crystal River for our warm spring-fed waters averaging 72 degrees year round. It is around these warm water springs that we find the largest concentration of manatees, many times nearly 100 at a time. This allows participants to have a most exciting and once in a lifetime opportunity!
SEA’s Manatee Encounter program is both educational and exciting, and we hope you can join us for a first hand experience with these gentle giants. Although we serve all customers, SEA specializes in groups, providing charter bus transportation for groups of 24 or more. Call today for available dates – 1-800-892-2364
